What interpretation means
Source interpretation describes how the recorded values should be understood before grading. Transfer curve and RGB gamut are separate properties. An incorrectly interpreted source may look washed out, too contrasty, or unexpectedly saturated.
Confirm the source information
Use the source’s color controls to inspect the file interpretation and available overrides. Compare those settings with the recording information from the camera or media supplier. Do not choose a curve only because its immediate appearance seems pleasing.
An explicit interpretation can affect every current use and future insertion of that source. Review more than one timeline instance after changing it. Use the file-color-space option when the file metadata is the intended authority.
Keep delivery expectations clear
Input support does not imply an equivalent output mastering format. The current finishing path is SDR Rec. 709 with 8-bit compositor surfaces. Check highlights and out-of-range colors on a representative export, especially when converting wide-gamut or high-dynamic-range recordings.
Use a creative grade after interpretation to establish the desired visual style.
